Serum metabolomic profiling facilitates the non-invasive identification of metabolic biomarkers associated with the onset and progression of non-small cell lung cancer

Abstract: Lung cancer (LC) is responsible for most cancer deaths. One of the main factors contributing to the lethality of this disease is the fact that a large proportion of patients are diagnosed at advanced stages when a clinical intervention is unlikely to succeed. In this study, we evaluated the potential of metabolomics by 1H-NMR to facilitate the identification of accurate and reliable biomarkers to support the early diagnosis and prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).We found that the metabolic profile… Show more

“…A recent report describes different steps involved in the metabolomics characterization of biofluids for clinical applications, ranging from study design to biological interpretation with an emphasis on the specific procedures required for processing and interpreting the NMR data. 63 Another study presents a new approach to analyze NMR data to find discriminatory variables using minimum classification error rates as test statistics. 64 Error rates are transformed into p-values, referred to as ERp, which are potentially useful in addressing many characteristics of metabolomics data.…”

“…The poor survival group had more current smokers and fewer never smokers than the good survival group (P=0.015). In addition, the poor survival group had more patients with suboptimal performance status (2-3) than the good survival group (P=0.001). In the validation cohort, the poor and good survival groups were well-matched on all selected characteristics except tumor stage.…”

“…The high mortality of lung cancer is mainly due to late diagnosis, resulting in poor response to clinical intervention (2). Platinum-based chemotherapy is the standard treatment for advanced-stage (III/IV) NSCLC (3).…”
