Serum monoclonal immunoglobulin bands in undifferentiated lymphomas of Burkitt and non-Burkitt types

Abstract: Using an improved electroimmunofixation technique that combines the sensitivity of high resolution agarose gel electrophoresis with the specificity of immunoprecipitation, we have demonstrated monoclonal immunoglobulin bands in the serum of patients with undifferentiated lymphomas of Burkitt and non-Burkitt types. Monoclonal bands were detected in the serum of 12 of 21 patients with extensive tumor, and 1 of 10 patients with minimal tumor. All of the bands were identified as IgM of a single light chain class. … Show more

“…Ko and Pruzanski 12 detected an IgM protein in 33 of 62 patients with lymphoma who had an M compo nent in their serum. Magrath and associates 20 found an IgM protein in the serum specimens of 12 of 21 patients with undifferentiated lymphoma of Burkitt or non-Burkitt type with use of agarose gel electrophoresis and immunofixation.…”

“…It should be noted that the latter series was published before the definition of stringent diagnostic criteria in the 1990s, and CLL could only be regarded as a probable diagnosis. In a small series of undifferentiated lymphomas of non‐African Burkitt's and non‐Burkitt's type, monoclonal bands were detected in 42% (Magrath, Benjamin & Papadopoulos, 1983).…”
