Serum paraoxonase 1 (PON1) measurement: an update

Abstract: Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is a widely studied enzyme based on its protective role against poisoning by organophosphate (OP) metabolites of specific OP insecticides and in vascular disease, as well as its use as biomarker of diseases involving oxidative stress, inflammation and liver diseases. This review provides an update about the current knowledge in the field of the analytical procedures that are used for PON1 measurements. It will be specially focused on: (a) characteristics of the different substrates used for… Show more

“…PON-1 is synthesized in the liver and it is a Ca-dependent and HDL associated enzyme [40] . PON-1 decreases the oxidative stress in transgenic mice [41] , and there is an increase in the gene expressions related with oxidative stress in PON-1-knockout mice.…”

“…It is able to control inflammation and protect cells from oxidative stress (Farid and Horil 2012) because it inhibits LDL oxidation. Ceron et al (2014) commented on its antibacterial effect against P. aeruginosa. Experimental studies have indicated that ARE plays an important role in the fight against bacterial biofilm formation (Camps et al 2011).…”

“…Different substrates and assays were proposed for serum PON1 measurement, as a biomarker for diagnosis of diseases related with oxidative stress and inflammation, but there are still problems regarding the variety of substrates and the lack of reference methods [182,183].…”
