Serum pro-collagen III peptide levels are related to lobular necrosis in untreated patients with chronic hepatitis C

Abstract: In patients with CHC, serum PIIIP levels reflect histological parameters strictly related to fibrogenesis. Therefore, PIIIP is a useful tool to evaluate ongoing fibrogenic activity of CHC. A complete histological score is needed in order to understand the relationships between biochemical markers of fibrogenesis and histology.

“…A significant decrease in the serum level of type III procollagen-N-peptide (P3P) was observed in ABMi therapy with splenectomy group at 24 weeks (Fig. 6d) [20]. The serum level of serum hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) was higher in the ABMi therapy with splenectomy group than in the ABMi therapy only group (4 weeks, 0.51 ± 0.15 vs. 0.41 ± 0.10; 24 weeks, 0.55 ± 0.19 vs. 0.46 ± 0.08) (Fig.…”

“…89,90 In chronic HCV, PIIINP levels have not been shown to correlate with degree of fibrosis but do correlate with the scores for necrosis. 91,92 In patients receiving methotrexate, PIIINP appears to be a useful test for the evaluation of liver injury. [93][94][95] …”

“…PIIINP has achieved a limited clinical application, but not widespread acceptance 49. In chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients, PIIINP levels have not been shown to correlate with the degree of fibrosis but do correlate with scores for necrosis 50,51. PIIINP levels are known to be elevated in acute and chronic active hepatitis and correlate with aminotransferase levels 52,53.…”
