Serum Urate Concentrations in Male High-School Students

Abstract: The results of this study offer additional evidence of the relationship of serum uric acid (SUA) levels to achievement-oriented behavior. The SUA determinations were made on 62 male high-school junior-and senior\p=m-\ level students and were repeated 4 1/2 years later. The correlation between the two determinations was 0.76.The subjects were divided into three groups: (1) those who completed college (CC), (2) those who attempted college but dropped out (AC), and (3) those who did not attend college (NC)

“…Stetten and Hearon [17] reported a positive and significant correlation (r = 0.07) between serum uric acid level and the score of an intelligence test. Other studies [4,12,3,11,1] reported that serum or plasma uric acid level was higher in executives or Ph.D. than craftsmen or general population, in highschool students who engaged in extracurricular activities more often than those who did less so, in students with a higher educational level than those with a lower level, and in those with higher score or degree of drive, activity, leadership or achievements than those with a lower score.…”

“…2. If we take as a result of this study the renewed confirmation (Kasl, Brooks, & Cobb, 1966;) that serum urate levels seem related to indirect measures of achievement striving, while selfreport measures of actual achievement do not seem to correlate in a reliable fashion, then the question still remains what the implica- It seems to us that these results are fully consistent with Orowan's (1955) notion of uric acid as a stimulant of central nervous system functioning, that is, an activating agent. According to Orowan's view, uric acid would affect a person's general, nonspecific level of activation, making that person more alert, striving, and active.…”
