Serum VEGF: Diagnostic Value of Acute Coronary Syndrome from Stable Angina Pectoris and Prognostic Value of Coronary Artery Disease

Abstract: Background. Although the level of serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is elevated in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients, its potential role in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) or stable angina pectoris (SAP) patients remains unclear. Objectives. To evaluate diagnostic accuracy of serum VEGF in determining ACS patients from SAP and analyze the association of serum VEGF with coronary artery lesions in SAP or the GRACE score in ACS, which is involved in the poor prognosis of low serum VEGF. Methods. … Show more

“…VEGF-a was named after its role in angiogenesis. The VEGF-a serum level is elevated in coronary artery disease (CAD) and low serum VEGF-a has been found to indicate severe coronary artery lesions and a higher GRACE score, indicating poor clinical outcomes ( Huang et al., 2020 ). Too low VEGF can lead to decreased angiogenesis and lack of oxygen to the tissues.…”

“…Being a master regulator of oxygen homeostasis, HIF-1 was found to be increased in myocardial hypoxia [ 77 ], which affects the criticality of the mitochondrial function, as it controls oxygen delivery and utilization and redox homeostasis [ 78 ]. Moreover, increased cardiac oxygen tension dramatically reduces the expression of VEGF [ 79 ], which was previously reported in multiple CVDs with poor clinical outcomes [ 80 ]. In the same context, our results showed significant reduction in cardiac level of VEGF in the NASH group.…”

“…The highest HGF productivity was observed in five-layered HSMM sheets containing 40% HSMF (Supplementary Figure 5B). Although levels of the VEGF and HGF increase in serum of myocardial infarction patients (Kubota et al, 2004;Seko et al, 2004;Atluri and Woo, 2008;Huang et al, 2020), it is noteworthy that the amount of these cytokines secreted from the five-layered HSMM sheets co-cultured with HSMFs were much higher, suggesting the ability of the five-layered HSMM sheets in induction of angiogenesis toward the injure site.…”
