Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) continue to provide essential services for various applications such as surveillance, data gathering, and data transmission from hazardous environments to safer destinations. This has been enhanced by the energy-efficient routing protocols that are mostly designed for such purposes. Gateway-based Energy-Aware Multi-hop Routing protocol (MGEAR) is one of the homogenous routing schemes that was recently designed to more efficiently reduce the energy consumption of distant nodes. However, it has been found that the protocol has a high energy consumption rate, lower stability period, and poorer data transmission to the Base station (BS) when it was deployed for a longer period of time. In this paper, an enhanced Heterogeneous Gateway-based Energy-Aware multi-hop routing protocol (HMGEAR) is proposed. The proposed routing scheme is based on the introduction of heterogeneous nodes in the existing scheme, selection of the head based on the residual energy, introduction of multi-hop communication strategy in all the regions of the network, and implementation of energy hole elimination technique. All these strategies are aiming at reducing energy consumption and extend the life of the network. Results show that the proposed routing scheme outperforms two existing ones in terms of stability period, throughputs, residual energy, and the lifetime of the network.

Objectives: To develop an energy efficient routing protocol using SA-LEACH to Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). Methods: The Simulated Annealing (SA) and LEACH algorithms are used to optimize the energy and maximize the active period of the network nodes. Here, initially the selection of the cluster head will be chosen by LEACH protocol; however, it is further investigated by SA algorithm to get better neighboring node (if exist) when compared with the selected one cluster head. Findings: There is an improvement in the throughput by 5.25%, 30% when compared with EE-LEACH and LEACH algorithms respectively. Also, energy is improved by 11.11% and 23.07% when compared to EE-LEACH and LEACH respectively. The performance of the designed algorithm has well suited for Coal mine industry, in which large number of sensor nodes is deployed to monitor the situation of the coal mine, continuously. Novelty: The designed algorithm is simple and effective. Furthermore, the proposed approach can enhance the rural healthcare monitoring system.

A wireless sensor network (WSN) composed of many tiny devices that rely on energy efficient routing protocols for extension of their lifetime. Many cluster-based routing protocols have been proposed based on heterogeneity in recent times. Indeed, these protocols are aiming at achieving energy efficiency, throughputs and better lifetime of the networks. However, two important factors that could have helped some of these protocols to achieve the above-mentioned aims are really missing. Factors such as the distance and average distance between nodes and the Base Station (BS) in selecting a cluster head needed to be considered. These were the major challenges that were identified in the Distributed Energy Efficient Clustering (DEEC) protocol after careful study. As a result, the throughputs and the lifetime of the scheme were affected. In this paper, a reviewed hierarchy-based heterogeneous routing protocol called Distance-DEEC (D-DEEC) is proposed to enhance the DEEC protocol. The new algorithm took into account the residual energy, distance of the individual nodes and average distance of all the nodes from the BS in selecting the Cluster Heads (CHs). This has allowed the protocol to select a cluster head that has high residual energy, is closer to the BS and at the same time not too far from its neighbours. The scheme also employed the sleep and awake approach to reduce energy dissipation. The technique allows the Base BS to calculate the maximum energy of distant nodes and determines when such nodes can transmit their report based on a given threshold energy, Eth . The performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated using MatLab R2018a and the outcomes showed that, D-DEEC protocol outperformed TDEEC in terms of energy consumption, throughputs and the network lifetime.
