Sesquiterpene Lactone Glycosides from Arnica longifolia

Abstract: Flowers of ARNICA LONGIFOLIA were investigated for the occurrence of sesquiterpene lactone glycosides. A mixture containing the two isomeric 11alpha,13-dihydro- and 11beta,13-dihydro-4 H-tomentosin glucosides, previously isolated from A. AMPLEXICAULIS and A. MOLLIS, together with the two isomeric 11alpha,13-dihydro- and 11beta,13-dihydro-4 H-carabrone glucosides were found in A. LONGIFOLIA. All carbon and proton shifts of the glycosides could be assigned by their 2D-COSY and 2D-HETCOR spectra and spectroscopy … Show more

“…The chemical skeleton of compound 3 was similar to 2-desacetoxy-11a,13-dihydroxanthuminol and 11b,13-dihydro-4H-tomentosin but different stereochemistry at H-8 and H-11. 23,24 The absolute stereochemistry of compound 3 (11a,13-dihydroxanthuminol) remained undefined.…”

“…Tomentosin is a phytochemical sesquiterpene lactone mainly found in medicinal herbs, such as Arnica longifolia , Inula japonica , Inula viscosa , and Xanthium strumarium . 26 29 Tomentosin is known to exert anticancer activity in several types of cancer cells. 16 According to a recent report, tomentosin induces apoptosis and increases the SubG0 and G2/M population in human melanoma cell lines.…”
