Setting up and maintaining a dedicated student-led peer-assisted learning society: our experience and recommendations

Abstract: Peer-assisted learning (PAL) is becoming increasingly popular within medical education, reflected by the amount of literature on the subject. There are numerous benefits of PAL for both teachers, students and faculty. At Lancaster Medical School, we decided to first investigate whether students wanted a student-led PAL society. Following the results, we set up the Lancaster University Peer-Assisted Learning Society (LUPALS) in 2013. Since its foundation, LUPALS has successfully provided over 100 teaching sessi… Show more

“…Based on this scoping study, possible areas for future research in PAL include the following: an objective assessment of the benefits of PAL for both tutors and students; more research into its possible use in postgraduate training; evaluation of the degree of formal training required for tutor success; use of this practice in the teaching of basic clinical sciences (specifically statistics and epidemiology) and patient management (areas where studies as to its use and benefits are lacking); and prospective studies into whether PAL as an undergraduate inspires future involvement in medical education for both students and tutors. For those inspired to start PAL several papers providing advice and tips are recommended 26,[65][66][67] .…”

“…From detailed curricula evaluations (2) to reflections from staff (3,4) and students (3)(4)(5) involved in teaching it has been heartening to read about the positive impact that near-peer education has had on the learning process. In particular, it has been exciting to read about the variety of approaches taken in so many different countries…”
