Seven-waste framework of waste identification and elimination for computer-based administrative work

Abstract: PurposeThis paper tries to generalize business process improvement (BPI) methodology. It utilizes the seven-waste framework as an essential step in the methodology. While the seven-waste concept is usually applied for manufacturing activities, this paper tries to explore the applicability of it to office-work activities. Also, this paper demonstrates that information technology can be used as a tool for reducing waste in the office-work.Design/methodology/approachA comprehensive literature review of BPI method… Show more

“…In actual system operation, ∆P laod 1 , ∆P load 2 and C ISO,AASSs in ( 11)-( 14) are given from system operational data, not calculated values. Therefore, only L(∆P load 1 ) and L(∆P load 2 ) need to be determined in order to calculate (13) and (14). Figure 4 shows the IEEE 39 bus system, and Figure 5 shows the change in L(∆P load 2 ) according to the ∆P load 2 in the IEEE 39 bus system [36].…”

“…TPS's primary principle is cost reduction through the elimination of wastes, which includes overproduction, inventory, motion, defects, over-processing, waiting, and transport. While the TPS concept is not new, it is still being utilized in a variety of industries [13][14][15], and the TPS principle can be applied to the electric power industry. When TPS is applied to the electric power industry, reserve equates to inventory, one of the seven TPS wastes, and efficient power system operation is only achievable when inventory is minimized.…”

“…Then, researchers began to study the implementation aspects of lean manufacturing. [13][14][15][16] Because researchers also began to work on lean manufacturing, many research papers reporting the research on lean manufacturing appeared in the literature arena. [17][18][19][20][21][22] The number of papers publishing research on lean manufacturing became very high to enable some researchers like Gaikwad and Sunnapwar, 20 Veena and Prabhushankar, 23 Psomas and Antony, 24 Augusto and Tortorella 25 and Chandrayan et al 26 to publish review papers on lean manufacturing researches.…”

“…BPR is defined as "the fundamental rethinking and radical redesign of business processes to achieve dramatic improvements in critical, contemporary measures of performance, such as cost, quality, service, and speed" (Hammer and Champy 2009). The major phases of BPR can be summarized in a five-step-continuous-improvement-like cycle: (1) Initiation of the reengineering or improvement process, (2) Diagnosis through analyzing the current state and finding areas of improvement, (3) Design of the future state, (4) Implementation of the future state, and finally (5) Evaluation and continuous assessment of the new process (Adesola and Baines 2005;Widodo et al 2020).…”
