Severe abdominal dog bite wounds in a pregnant cat

Abstract: Bite wounds are one of the most common reasons for admission of cats to veterinary clinics. Appropriate wound management seems to be more important in the successful outcome of bite wound injuries than antibiotic therapy alone. This report describes a heavily pregnant cat that suffered severe abdominal bite wounds necessitating treatment with extensive surgery. “…Traumatic rupture of the gravid uterus in a cat has been reported several times, 4 – 11 most commonly as the result of traffic accident or bite wounds. Uterine rupture after known trauma was diagnosed by routine or elective ovariohysterectomy in four cases, 4 , 5 , 7 , 9 and via exploratory celiotomy following known trauma and subsequent, incomplete parturition in two cases.…”

Consequently, the lack of signs of uterine rupture has been claimed as inclusion criteria for the diagnosis of primary EUP [5].…”

“…When they eventually visit a hospital, the wound may have deteriorated to the point where defining its anatomical structure becomes difficult. Kumru (2007) describes the need for treatment of severe abdominal bite wounds with extensive surgery and states that appropriate wound management is more important in the successful outcome of bite wound injuries than antibiotic therapy alone [8]. The enterocutaneous fistula in our case would not have occurred if the initial bite wound was cared for appropriately.…”
