Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-1) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infections in pregnancy – An overview

Abstract: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-1) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infections, like most other viruses that affect the respiratory tract can cause severe maternal illness and adverse pregnancy outcomes. They are not only highly transmissible (acquired through droplets), but Host reservoirs such as dromedary camels for MERS-CoV and masked palm civet for SARS-CoV are critical links in the onset of outbreaks. Clinically they present with flu-like symptoms and th… Show more

“…The Avian influenza A virus has infected 134 people, resulting in 45 fatalities. The cases of SARS-CoV-1 were first found in Hong Kong and China in 2003 and infected thousands of people worldwide, along with 800 causalities [3] , [7] . However, the MERS-CoV was first identified in an infected patient hospitalized in Saudi Arabia in 2012.…”

“…Pregnancy, by virtue of its inherent physiological adaptations, would be expected to increase the risk of morbidity associated with COVID-19, particularly owing to a relatively immunocompromised state secondary to alterations within the body’s cell-mediated immune response and inflammatory mechanisms [ 3 , 4 ]. Therefore, it is imperative to closely monitor laboratory parameters, including the white blood cell count, lymphocyte count, and C-reactive protein, along with other imaging features in computed tomography chest scans, to promptly prevent, diagnose, and treat SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy [ 5 , 6 ].…”
