Severe disease in adult dairy cattle in three UK dairy herds associated with BVD virus infection

Abstract: During 1993 outbreaks of diarrhoea in adult dairy cows in three geographically unrelated herds were found to be caused by bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV). The affected animals showed signs of acute watery diarrhoea, agalactia and pyrexia (39.4 to 42 degrees C). Ulceration of the buccal mucosa, a mucoid nasal discharge and stiffness were inconsistent signs. The disease spread rapidly in each case. The diagnosis was confirmed by the isolation of non-cytopathic BVDV from blood and tissues and by the demonstra… Show more

“…Modified live vaccines provide better efficacy and immunogenicity at the expense of safety. Their use is contra-indicated in pregnant animals, as spread of virus to the foetus causing foetopathic effects can occur 1,3,5,[7][8][9]11,27 . Herd immunity to BVD is likely to decline over time, and long-term control of the disease should include a recommendation to vaccinate replacement heifers and cows annually 3 weeks before breeding.…”

“…3 During the last decade, an increased number of field cases of severe acute BVD in all age groups of cattle has been reported. 8,10,18,30 The BVDV isolates from these outbreaks in North America predominantly belong to BVDV 2. 8 Besides the highly virulent strains of BVDV 2, there also exist strains causing subclinical infections only.…”

“…11,22 Occasionally, scattered outbreaks of severe disease do occur. 1,19,20 The emergence of virulent viral strains in the USA 7,23 and reports of severe acute BVD in Great Britain in 1992 8 preceded the occurrence of widespread outbreaks of severe acute BVD in both Quebec 18 and Ontario (Canada) 4 …”
