BACKGROUNDDelayed cervical haematoma abscess formation following neck hyperextension is rare, particularly in patients without identifi able risk factors. We present such a case, and discuss the key features of diagnosis and management.
CASE PRESENTATIONWhile paint-balling a 15-year-old boy was shot on the front of his face guard causing him to hyperextend his neck. Over a period of 6 days he developed neck stiffness, fever and a progressively enlarging painful swelling in the region of his left upper sternocleidomastoid muscle. These features were not consistent with a simple musculoskeletal sprain.
