Severity, Chronicity, and Timing of Maternal Depression and Risk for Adolescent Offspring Diagnoses in a Community Sample

Abstract: Even relatively brief maternal major depression, but more prolonged mild depression, predicted children's risk for depressive disorders by age 15 years in a community sample. Nondepressive outcomes were more complex to predict, which was due in part to difficulty dating disorder onset in relation to maternal depression. Exposure to maternal depression at any period in the first 10 years equally predicted youth depression if the mother was depressed only once. Further studies are needed to shed light on the mec… Show more

“…However, such limitations do not invalidate our results, since 80% of depressed women present more than one lifetime depressive episode, and approximately one third of these women suffer from recurrent episodes, which also elevates the probability of a new episode 40 . Recurrence and the chronicity of maternal depression have been acknowledged in several studies [41][42][43][44] , with special emphasis regarding the duration of the episodes as a potentializing condition for offspring mental health and cognition impairments.…”

“…Systematic identification of women with either antenatal or postnatal distress not meeting diagnostic criteria may be useful, as many of these women experience considerable dysfunction and may require assistance [224]. Prolonged mild maternal depression has been found to predict children's risk for depressive disorders by age 15 in a community sample [225]. Women screening positive with the EDS or other perinatal risk questionnaires who do not subsequently meet criteria for Axis I psychiatric diagnoses may represent a group of women with significant emotional distress or personality difficulties requiring assistance from health or social services and they should not be lightly dismissed as -false positives‖.…”

“…Além de a ocorrência da depressão materna estar relacionada a efeitos adversos no desenvolvimento infantil, o caráter crônico ou recorrente da depressão e sua severidade são aspectos relacionados a maiores prejuí-zos. Crianças com mães deprimidas tendem a ter mais problemas de comportamento ou depressão quanto maior foi a severidade e a duração da depressão materna (Goodman, 2007;Hammen & Brennan, 2003).…”
