“…Coprostanol was widely distributed in sediments of the reservoir, ranging from 0.11 μg g −1 to 1.24 μg g −1 , with the average concentration of 0.51 μg g −1 , which was similar to the concentrations of coprostanol in sediments of rivers of Serbia and Ulungur Lake in northern Xinjiang [39,40]. Generally, the concentration of coprostanol has been used to assess the sewage pollution level, and the maximum threshold of sewage contamination used in previous studies was 0.7 μg g −1 [20,30]. Hence, we considered 0.7 μg g −1 as the threshold of sewage contamination in our study.…”

“…Particularly, coprostanol is considered as a major sign of fecal contamination, and a positive connection has been found between levels of coprostanol and abundance of fecal bacteria in previous studies [17,18]. Moreover, various thresholds of coprostanol concentrations (such as 0.1, 0.5, or 0.7 μg g −1 ) were proposed to indicate sewage contamination in aquatic sediments [19][20][21]. Phytosterols are mainly found in the seeds of plants, including sitosterol, stigmasterol, and campesterol.…”

“…Population pressure and industrialization have increased over the past decades, impacting the system's ecohydrology, habitats, and associated human activities. Water pollution issues include those associated with diffuse source pollution land use and agricultural activities [74,75], sewage treatment systems [66,76] and industrial activities [77], contamination of aquaculture resources [78], The Ria de Aveiro includes a hierarchy of environmental protection statutes, including "nature reserve", "national ecological reserve", and "Natura 2000 network" under the Birds (2009/147/EC, 30.11) and Habitats Directives (92/43/EEC, 25.5). Due to its low altitude and the flat topography of its marginal lands, the Ria de Aveiro is prone to large sedimentary deposition supplied from rivers, especially in flood seasons [68], as well as to tides, floods, storm surges, and upstream extreme events [69].…”

“…However, concentrations were lower than those found in the State of Rio de Janeiro as in Araruama Lagoon, Guanabara Bay, Santos Bay and in another countries like Dorchester Bay and Ria de Aveiro Lagoon. 22,57,58,60,68 The Araruama Lagoon, a hypersaline lagoon that underwent a disordered occupation process in its surroundings, receives a large input of organic matter from domestic sewage; the Guanabara Bay, an estuary also located in the urban area of Rio de Janeiro that receives sewage from several rivers flowing in its waters; the Santos Bay in São Paulo and other regions in the world, such as the Dorchester Bay in the USA and Ria de Aveiro lagoon in Portugal, environments under sewage discharge due to urbanization and terrestrial runoff process. The more intense urbanization process and the large amounts of domestic and industrial effluents may be the reason for the higher coprostanol values in those regions.…”

“…19 Sterols can be good indicators of domestic effluents present in aquatic environments 20 and have been used in several studies about coastal regions. [21][22][23] In addition, they can help to characterize the organic matter sources distinguishing plankton, higher plants, fungi and bacterial activity. [24][25][26] The importance of coastal lagoons as potential ecosystems for emission of greenhouse gases is related to the accumulation of different forms of organic carbon.…”
