Sex-dependent differences for larkspur (Delphinium barbeyi) toxicosis in yearling Angus cattle1

Abstract: Larkspur (Delphinium spp.) poisoning is a long-term problem for cattle grazing on rangelands of western North America. Results from preliminary experiments have suggested that differences in larkspur toxicity may exist between heifers and bulls. The objective of this study was to compare the physiological responses of yearling Angus heifers, steers, and bulls with a standardized dose of Delphinium barbeyi and to test the hypothesis that the response is sex dependent. Clinical signs of intoxication, including m… Show more

“…Of course, the plant plays an important role where the MSAL and non-MSAL alkaloid concentration and composition, which depend on the population, species, climate, and the year, affect the cattle toxicity and the amount needed from the plant to develop clinical signs of toxicity. 61,62 The 7,8-methylenedioxy-NDA are the least toxic alkaloids. The lycoctonine-type is twice as toxic, but is still considered to be of relatively low toxicity.…”

“…Sex plays a role in the serum concentrations of larkspur alkaloid biomarkers (Figure 4) (48). When yearling heifers, bulls, and steers were dosed with 8 mg/kg MSAL-type alkaloids in the form of dry, finely ground larkspur; heifers and bulls had larger serum MLA concentrations than did steers (Figure 5).…”
