Sex differences in brain correlates of STEM anxiety

Abstract: Anxiety is known to dysregulate the salience, default mode, and central executive networks of the human brain, yet this phenomenon has not been fully explored across the STEM learning experience, where anxiety can impact negatively academic performance. Here, we evaluated anxiety and large-scale brain connectivity in 101 undergraduate physics students. We found sex differences in STEM-related and clinical anxiety, with longitudinal increases in science anxiety observed for both female and male students. Sex-sp… Show more

“…Because of these reasons, scholars need to identify the causes of science anxiety to develop targeted measures. Experiencing higher levels of anxiety can negatively impact one's working memory, hinder information processing, and impede problem-solving skills, all of which are crucial components for succeeding in STEM fields (Gonzalez et al, 2019;Reis et al, 2014). When students face anxiety-related cognitive obstacles, they may struggle to comprehend, retain, and apply scientific knowledge (Meaders et al, 2020).…”

“…This finding pinpoints that the common trend of striving for fitness and an ideal body shape and weight has produced a shift in the prevalence of the PESs' use according to gender in Egypt. Moreover, STEM-related anxiety affects females' students more frequently than males and the manifestations include unease, avoidance, or fear of learning science or math topics (Gao et al 2020;Gonzalez et al 2019).…”
