Sex Differences in Quality of Life in Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Abstract: In the largest study of diverse SLE patients with a disease specific QOL tool, gender differences in QOL were observed on both HRQOL and non-HRQOL constructs. While men performed worse in the social support domain, women, especially those in the reproductive age group, fared worse on other domains. These observations may assist physicians in appropriately addressing QOL issues in a gender focused manner. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

“…According to the former one, the few existing studies suggest that sex can influence QL levels, with a greater deterioration being observed in women than in men (Singh et al., ; Vasquez et al., ). These differences could be due to cognitive impairment and infertility problems associated with lupus (Jolly et al., ). In addition, this associated symptomatology, seems to cause a greater number of psychological problems (Arévalo‐Bermúdez, Pita‐Fernández, Paradela, & Fonseca, ).…”

“…In addition, this associated symptomatology, seems to cause a greater number of psychological problems (Arévalo‐Bermúdez, Pita‐Fernández, Paradela, & Fonseca, ). Despite these differences, the influence of sex continues to be an aspect of interest, as other studies suggest not to be differences amongst men and women (Jolly et al., ). Another relevant aspect is the age of the patient and some studies have observed a lower QL in young people (Glinac, Matovic, Saric, & Bratovcic, ; Vasquez et al., ), while other studies suggest that the older the patient is, the greater is the number of associated complications they will have, which has a negative impact on the QL (Elera‐Fitzcarrald, Alva, Gamboa‐Cardenas, & Mora‐Trujillo, ).…”

“…При исследовании КЖСЗ с помощью специфического опросника LupusPRO в крупном когортном исследовании (122 мужчины и 1681 женщина) M. Jolly и соавт. [9] отметили, что у мужчин «страдала» шкала, оценивающая социальную поддержку, а у женщин -шкалы физического здоровья, боли, когнитивных нарушений и планирования семьи.…”
