Sex estimation standards for medieval and contemporary Croats

Abstract: AimTo develop discriminant functions for sex estimation on medieval Croatian population and test their application on contemporary Croatian population.MethodsFrom a total of 519 skeletons, we chose 84 adult excellently preserved skeletons free of antemortem and postmortem changes and took all standard measurements. Sex was estimated/determined using standard anthropological procedures and ancient DNA (amelogenin analysis) where pelvis was insufficiently preserved or where sex morphological indicators were not … Show more

“…SRY gene was detected from epithelial cell isolates obtained from saliva-stained removable acrylic dentures and shed epithelial cells isolated from toothbrushes [ 8 ]. SRY gene was detected from epithelial cell isolates obtained from saliva-stained removable acrylic dentures and shed epithelial cells isolated from toothbrushes [ 9 , 10 ]. However, in certain cases involving maternal-fetal microchimerism, as well as individuals with a history of blood transfusion or organ transplantation, false-positive results may occur [ 8 ].…”

“…This finding is similar and comparable to the studies conducted by Stojanowski where the use of metacarpal dimension to develop sex estimation found an accuracy ranging between 79% and 85% 11 . Similarly another study conducted by Zeljana Basic on mediaeval and modern population of Croatian for estimation of sex from standard skeletal measurement showed statistically significant sexual dimorphism by 74.7% 12 .…”
