Sex Pheromone of the Longtailed Mealybug: A New Class of Monoterpene Structure

Abstract: The sex pheromone of the longtailed mealybug, identified as 2-(1,5,5-trimethylcyclopent-2-en-1-yl)ethyl acetate, represents the first example of a new monoterpenoid skeleton. A [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement was used in a key step during construction of the sterically congested tetraalkylcylopentene framework.

“…The alcohol part of the pheromone compounds is a monoterpenol (or, as in the case of P. comstocki, a norterpenol), and it is related to maconelliol (compounds 1-3, Fig. 5; BierlLeonhardt et al, 1981;Arai et al, 2003;Nakahata et al, 2003;Zhang et al, 2004aZhang et al, , b, 2006Zhang and Amalin, 2005), lavandulol (compounds 4-8; Negishi et al, 1980;Hinkens et al, 2001;Zhang et al, 2004aZhang et al, , b, 2006Zhang and Amalin, 2005;Ho et al, 2007;Sugie et al, 2008), cyclopentylmethanol (compounds 10-12; Millar et al, 2005bMillar et al, , 2009Figadere et al, 2007), or chrysanthemol (9,13;Ho et al, 2009 and the present paper).…”

“…Therefore, the management of mealybug and scale insect vectors may be important in the fight against GLD. Control of mealybug populations can be achieved with natural enemies (43), parasitoids (39,41), and mating disruption (164) based on pheromone traps (114)(115)(116). However, although attractive to reduce vector populations, biological control of mealybugs is not sufficient to restrict virus spread (76).…”
