Sex-related alcohol expectancies among adolescents: I. Scale development.

Abstract: A measure of sex-related alcohol expectancies was developed with a representative sample of 916 sexually experienced adolescents (13 to 19 years) who had ever consumed alcohol. Expectancy items represented 3 domains: enhancement of sexual experience, increased sexual risk taking, and disinhibition of sexual behavior. Confirmatory analyses showed that a 3-factor model provided a good fit to the data. Adequate reliability and low-to-moderate correlation among the expectancy measures were also demonstrated. Expec… Show more

“…Sex-related alcohol expectancies-To measure alcohol expectancies for sexual behaviors, a previously validated, 11-item questionnaire asks respondents to indicate the extent to which they agree or disagree with each statement using a five point Likert scale (Dermen & Cooper, 1994a, 1994b. A sample item is: "When I am high or drunk I am more likely to do sexual things I usually wouldn't do."…”

“…We assessed sex-related alcohol expectancies with Dermen and Cooper's (1994) 13-item measure. Expectancies assessed by this measure fall within three subscales: sexual enhancement, risk, and disinhibition.…”

“…Alcohol expectancies-Two of Dermen and Cooper's (1994) alcohol-expectancy subscales were used to assess alcohol expectancies relevant to sexual risk taking. The 6-item sexual-risk subscale and the 7-item disinhibition subscale were highly correlated, r = .65, p < .001; thus, they were combined into a single measure.…”

“…Based on past research and theory, alcohol expectancies about sexual risk taking and self-efficacy regarding condom use when intoxicated were expected to be significant predictors of frequency of condom use with casual partners when intoxicated (Abbey, Saenz, & Buck, 2005;Brien et al, 1994;Dermen & Cooper, 1994). A measure of usual alcohol consumption was included, although our expectation was that it would not be significant when drinking within the sexual situation was already taken into account.…”
