Sex related differences in therapy and outcome of patients with intermittent claudication in a real-world cohort

Abstract: Background and aims: The prevalence of lower extremity artery disease (LEAD) is increasing worldwide and sexrelated differences are a current matter of debate. Methods: We analysed claims data on unselected patients with in-patient treatment for LEAD with intermittent claudication (IC; Rutherford grade 1-3) from 01.01.2014 to 31.12.2015. Data files included diagnostic and procedural information from two years before index, and a five-year follow-up. Results: Our analysis comprised 42,197 IC patients, thereof 2… Show more

“…PAD comprises a diverse group of disorders that lead to progressive stenosis, occlusion, or aneurysmal dilation of the aorta and its non-coronary branch arteries, including the carotid, upper extremity, visceral, and lower extremity arterial branches [6,7]. The prevalence of PAD is approximately 12% in the adult population, affecting >200 million people worldwide, and this prevalence is age-dependent, being males affected slightly more than females [8][9][10].…”

“…In addition to observing great variability in prescribing between different countries and medical specialties, elderly patients and patients with typical symptoms were less likely and more likely, respectively, to have their treatment intensified ( 170 ). In addition to age ( 19 ), it appears that sex also influences the prescribing of statins in patients with PAD, such that men were more likely to receive statins than women ( 19 , 172 174 ), although this does not translate into better LDL-C targets ( 172 ).…”

“…This is probably caused due to the fact that women more often present with borderline ABI and longer symptom-free periods compared with their male counterparts. 19–21 In IC patients, approximately two-thirds of the patients are male, 22 , 23 while in CLTI patients, the prevalence is only marginal lower in women compared with men. 16 , 24–26 Various studies have shown that women are older 23 , 27 , 28 and older patients, as well as women, receive less often guideline-recommended medication.…”
