“…Results indicated a main effect of the version [F(1.133) = 36.31, p < 0.001], demonstrating that the emotional version stimulates more arousal (M = 1.81; SD = 1.14) than the non-emotional version (M = 0.80, SD = 0.72), which is consistent with previous studies 18,28,29 . In addition, we observed an effect of the presence of SAD [F(1.133) = 5.52, p < 0.05], which was responsible for a more intense evaluation of the effect of the stories' emotional arousal (M = 1.58, SD = 1.06) in comparison to the participants without SAD (M = 1.22, SD = 1.11), which is consistent with typical aspects of this disorder, in which individuals often become hypervigilant regarding their physiological alterations and their bodily sensations, which seems to interfere in how participants with SAD rated the material 30 .…”

“…fMRI findings indicate stronger activation to arousing erotic pictures in males compared to females, but an opposite pattern for mutilations (Sabatinelli et al, 2004). Larger positive potentials in the 250-700 ms range have been found in females compared to males for arousing pictures with unpleasant affect (Gasbarri et al, 2006). Not all studies find gender effects, but systematic assessment of gender could prove fruitful in characterizing stimulus-and task factors (Cahill, 2004;Rozenkrants and Polich, 2007).…”

“…Armony and Sergerie (2007) extended these results by demonstrating that not only the sex of the observer but also the sex of the stimulus face plays a role in this lateralized processing: while the left amygdala was more engaged in memory for fearful female faces in women, right amygdala activation was associated with successful remembered male faces in men. Using EEG, Gasbarri et al (2006Gasbarri et al ( , 2007 could show a significant sex by hemisphere interaction with a female-left and male-right direction in the P300 evoked by either emotionally arousing pictures or stories. The findings described above were further enhanced by a study by Kilpatrick et al (2006), providing evidence for the corresponding sex difference in functional connectivity during resting conditions.…”
