Sex-specific expression of CTNNB1 in the gonadal morphogenesis of the chicken

Abstract: BackgroundBeta-catenin (CTNNB1), as a key transcriptional regulator in the WNT signal transduction cascade, plays a pivotal role in multiple biological functions such as embryonic development and homeostasis in adults. Although it has been suggested that CTNNB1 is required for gonad development and maintenance of ovarian function in mice, little is known about the expression and functional role of CTNNB1 in gonadal development and differentiation in the chicken reproductive system.MethodsTo examine sex-specifi… Show more

“…semilaevis , Nile tilapia and Chlamys farreri , β-catenin is predominately expressed in the oocytes, especially in the early stages of development [ 12 , 27 ]. However, chicken β-catenin mRNA is transcribed only in the Sertoli cells of the testes from the immature to mature stages [ 34 ]. We speculate that this restricted transcription is probably caused by differences in the species.…”

“…Chlamys farreri, b-catenin was localized to the oocytes of the ovary (Li et al, 2014). In mammals, b-catenin was found in both germ and somatic cells of the ovary in mouse (Liu et al, 2009); But little or no expression of b-catenin mRNA was detected in the either immature or mature ovary (Bae et al, 2013). In this study, the b-catenin 1 protein was concentrated mainly in the cytoplasm of early development Oestrogen, especially E2, plays an important role in gonad development, sex regulation and reproductive behaviour.…”

“…β ‐catenin is the transcriptional effector of canonical Wnt signalling pathway, which plays an important role in sex determination and differentiation of mammals (Eggers & Sinclair, ). Currently, researches show that the activity of β ‐catenin gene had been determined as a pivotal gene for gonad development and maintenance of ovarian function in mammalian species (Bae et al., ). β ‐catenin loss leads to the formation and appearance of testis‐specific cells in foetal mouse ovaries (Liu, Bingham, Parker & Yao, ).…”

“…JUN and FOS, core nodes in module 1 of focally-irradiated lung areas, are transcription factors involved in diverse cellular processes such as development and immune process [ 45 , 46 ]. CTNNB1, core node with degrees of 51 in module 3 of focally-irradiated lung areas, is a key transcriptional regulator and is involved in morphogenesis or developmental process [ 47 , 48 ]. CTNNB1 was reported to regulate immune response [ 49 ] and to integrate cell adhesion and differentiation [ 50 ].…”
