Abstract: Youth engaging in sexting (texting plus sex) includes behaviors such as sending, receiving, or forwarding of nude or partially nude images via cell phones. The true prevalence of tweens and teens engaging in sexting is unclear. This might be because of the general secrecy of the behavior, the rapid advances in technology, and the lack of a clear definition that accounts for the added developmental factors (e.g., peak sexual development, impulsivity). Additionally, there is a lack of recognition of the conseque… Show more

“…Prior research also relates teens' time spent using technology to obesity (Kautiainen, Koivusilta, Lintonen, Virtanen, & Rimpelä, 2005). Likewise, digital technologies, some argue, have originated new forms of aggressive behaviours, and problematic or risky practices among young people such as cyberbullying and "sexting" (Ahern & Mechling, 2013;Slonje & Smith, 2008). In addition, the relation between frequent internet use and teens' online victimisation has also been reported by previous research (Erdur-Baker, 2010;Wolak, Ybarra, Mitchell, & Finkelhor, 2007).…”

“…According to Döring's (2014) conceptualization, the deviance discourse is the predominant theoretical framework used when considering the sexting phenomenon-both by society and academics. Hereby, sexting is framed as a new type of deviant sexualized behavior present in digital youth cultures that carries with it many risks (Ahern & Mechling, 2013;Draper, 2012;Hua, 2012). Risks such as the unwanted distribution and/or circulation of private sexts, (cyber)bullying by peers, exclusion from educational and future career opportunities, mental health problems, and criminal charges are among the most often cited.…”

“…As the evidence base regarding the risks of sexting begins to swell, so too does the literature on health professionals’ role in addressing the issue (Ahern & Mechling, ; Houck et al., ; Ybarra & Mitchell, ). Internationally, public health nurses (including family nurses, health visitors and school nurses) are uniquely placed to identify adolescent health needs and to offer guidance to young people engaged in sexting practices.…”

“…However, the literature in this field is limited and there are few empirical studies. Available evidence does indicate however, that there are significant opportunities and gaps in nursing knowledge and skills to address the issue (Ahern & Mechling, ; Crown, ; Van Ouytsel et al., ). To our knowledge, there has been no research in relation to public health nurses’ understandings of sexting practices among young people.…”
