“…Cosden and Cortez-Ison (1999) reported an association between sexual abuse and treatment retention in a sample of female residential patients. Our finding that sexual, physical, or emotional abuse was not significantly associated with negative UDS 1 year after beginning MMT is consistent with several studies (Bartholomew, Courtney, Rowan-Szal, & Simpson, 2005;Fiorentine, Pilati, & Hillhouse, 1999). Conversely, Messina, Wish, and Nemes (2000) found that a history of physical abuse was significantly associated with positive UDS at 19 months after treatment among patients in a therapeutic community.…”

“…In this sample, 36% of females reported experiencing some form of interpersonal abuse during their lifetime. Previous studies found similar rates, e.g., 39% in a sample of opioid-replacement treatment-seeking women (Bartholomew et al, 2005), indicating that a significant proportion of women seeking substance abuse treatment have experienced interpersonal abuse. Given that the current study found interpersonal abuse was prevalent and impacted treatment outcome, intervention to minimize its negative consequences is warranted.…”

“…However, there are clinical experts who contend that treatment of special populations may be enhanced if their particular needs associated with personal attributes and background characteristcs are considered and met in a treatment environment (American Psychiatric Association 1995; Bartholomew et al 2005;Kauffman and Woody 1995;Walton-Moss and McCaul 2006). The present research reflects an effort to apply and adapt Western research tools and methodologies to fit the unique social and cultural circumstances of the Middle East.…”

“…Rates of physical and mental abuse, as well as behavioral health issues are relatively high in patients suffering with OUD [26][27][28][29][30]. It is rare to observe that someone addicted to opioids is only struggling with the drug itself.…”
