Sexual behaviors, cannabis, alcohol and monkeypox infection

Abstract: The emergence of the monkeypox virus (MPXV) outbreak in 2022 is a worldwide health issue. The rapid increase of monkeypox cases caused the WHO to designate the escalating global monkeypox outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on July 23, 2022. The WHO has called on the group currently most affected by the virus, men who have sex with men (MSM), to limit their sexual partners. The diminution in number of sexual partners not only decreases the proportion of infected MSM but could also incre… Show more

“…Statistical analyses were stratified by sex due to cannabis consumption differences between females and males. 34,35 Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs for the associations between cannabis use and risk of all-cause mortality and causespecific hazard models for the risk of cause-specific mortality (CV and cancer). Kaplan-Meier analyses censored at 10 years' follow-up were performed and compared by log-rank test.…”

“…Mpox is not classified as a sexually transmitted infection (STI), although it can spread through intimate contact during sexual activity if there is an active skin rash (Sousa et al., 2022). However, there has been a disproportionate number of cases among gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM), leading the WHO and some national governments to issue specific recommendations for this group (Macedo & Maciel, 2023; Sousa et al., 2022; Vallée, 2023; World Health Organization, 2023). Notably, official guidelines highlight sexual behavior, advocating for a reduction in practices that involve multiple partners, such as group sex and chemsex (Şahin et al., 2023; Sousa et al., 2022).…”

“…In a review (Vallée, 2023), being a young man, MSM, HIV positive, using PrEP, and engaging in hazardous sexual behaviors are factors that increase the risk of MPXV infection. Additionally, participation in chemsex has been associated with higher exposure to STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections), unprotected sexual practices, and decreased adherence to ART (Antiretroviral Therapy) in individuals with HIV (Giorgetti et al., 2017).…”

“…[ 2 ] However, there has been no concrete research on Marijuana potential to treat monkeypox. As Vallee[ 3 ] points out, cannabis and alcohol consumption may have two negative effects on the monkeypox virus (MPXV) outbreak: increasing the number of sexual partners, which is primarily responsible for the increase in the number of new MPXV-infected cases, and impairing the immune response to a viral infection. It should be noted, however, that medical Marijuana with a well-controlled therapeutic approach can be useful and is not linked to addiction.…”
