Abstract

Inhabitants of Nordic countries have in international comparisons liberal sexual values and attitudes. Nordic countries are more tolerant than other Europeans about accepting, for example, sex without love and they are exceptionally liberal also in approval of abortion and homosexuals. However, Nordic people are nowadays very strict concerning unfaithfulness. Nordic countries represent an advanced model of a comprehensive sex education program in Europe. Despite this background decreasing trends in the age at first intercourse started first in Nordic countries and was followed later in other western European countries. Young people are nowadays sexually active a long time before they start to cohabit.
