Sexual Dimorphism in Finger Ridge Breadth Measurements: A Tool for Sex Estimation from Fingerprints

Abstract: Previous research has demonstrated significant sexual dimorphism in friction ridge skin characteristics. This study uses a novel method for measuring sexual dimorphism in finger ridge breadths to evaluate its utility as a sex estimation method from an unknown fingerprint. Beginning and ending in a valley, the width of ten parallel ridges with no obstructions or minutia was measured in a sample of 250 males and females (N = 500). The results demonstrate statistically significant differences in ridge breadth bet… Show more

“…KEYWORDS: forensic science, tenprint, ridge width, titanium dioxide, latent fingerprint, aging As a latent fingerprint ages, substantial visual (1) and chemical changes occur (2) that have an effect on the ridge morphology (3,4). The technique known as morphometrics has proven useful in discerning differences between men and women with respect to both the ridge density (5)(6)(7) and in the distribution of minutiae (8,9). It has been reported that aging causes ridge narrowing and a loss in the continuity of the ridges over time (10,11).…”

“…Mundorff et al [5] observed significant interfinger differences in mean ridge breadths. We have noted significant differences in RC per finger as well, and this suggests the need for digit identification to enable more precise sex discrimination.…”

“…Therefore, dermatoglyphic research on sexual dimorphism has focused on pattern and metric variation among different geographic populations [5] ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this research was to derive probability formulae based on ridge counts (RC) that could be used to contribute to sex determination in human identification. Methods: A modified technique of obtaining RC that is not influenced by finger patterns was employed.…”

“…Number of studies reported that the ridges of right hand were found to be coarser than the left hand (Cummins et al, 1994). It was evident that left hand have greater number of ridges than in the right (Gutie´rrez-Redomero et al, 2007) and finer ridges than the right fingers (Mundorff et al, 2014). But these observations may be influenced by sex (Gutie´rrez-Redomero et al, 2007).…”
