“…The National Health and Social Life Survey 46 reported that 43% of women and 31% of men between 18 and 59 years in the USA have sexual dysfunction, a prevalence that varies according to ethnicity and physical and psychological health status. In climacteric Hispanic populations, these rates have been found to be higher, ranging from 51.3% to 78.4% in Chile, Colombia and Ecuador 3,42,47 . The prevalence of female sexual dysfunction is quite high and tends to increase with age due to a decline in sexual interest, reduction of sexual intercourse and lubricating vaginal problems associated with the menopause (low estrogen secretion) 48 .…”

“…Menopausal women had significantly more vaginal dryness and dyspareunia than premenopausal women. In another cross-sectional analysis of 231 Columbian born women aged 40 to 62 years using a self report questionnaire, age was found to negatively influence all sexual function domains of desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and pain, while menopause affected only pain and lubrication domains significantly (21). The changes in sexual function with menopause and aging are seen to be a reflection of the underlying changes in the hormonal milieu mainly attributable to estrogens, with the role of androgens remaining unclear.…”
