Abstract:Globally, many species are threatened by population decline as a result of anthropogenic changes. Smaller populations are at greater risk of fragmentation, genetic isolation, and eventual inbreeding depression. As genetic load is expressed and adaptive potential is lost, risk of population extinction greatly increases. Genetic rescue, the controlled introduction of genetic variation, is a method used to potentially relieve such effects in small populations. However, without understanding how the characteristic… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
