Sexual violence in older adults: a Belgian prevalence study

Abstract: Background: Sexual violence (SV) is an important public health problem which may cause long-lasting health problems. SV in older adults remains neglected in research, policies and practices. Valid SV prevalence estimates and associated risk factors in older adults are currently unavailable. Objective: To measure lifetime and past 12-months sexual victimisation in older adults living in Belgium, its correlates, assailant characteristics and the way that victims framed their SV experiences. Design: Cross-secti… Show more

“…However, this difference in perception does not mean older adults donot experience sexual violence. In a recent Belgian study, one in twelve older adults (8.4%) indicated they were sexually victimized in the past 12 months [ 29 ].…”

“…More specifically, this study focuses on the magnitude of sexual violence and its associated factors in the Belgian general population aged 16 to 69. A separate study was conducted with Belgian residents aged 70 and older which used a different sampling scheme and face-to-face interviews instead of an online survey, see [ 29 ]. As such, we produce data that entails the lifetime and past-year prevalence of sexual victimization, representative with regard to sex and age across three age groups (16–24; 25–49; 50–69), factors associated with it that may be interpreted as individual risk factors (sociodemographic, socioeconomic, and sexuality-related factors) and individual outcomes (recent substance use and mental health indicators).…”

“…These number are higher compared to the 44.2% SV lifetime prevalence found in Belgian older adults. 8 Since SMI is associated with an increased risk of SV during lifetime, 4 higher SV rates compared to the general older population could be expected. Exposure to SV in the past 12-months was 7.3%, which is similar to the 8.4% found in the Belgian older population.…”

“…Between 8 th July 2019 and 12 th March 2020, a representative sample of the Belgian older population participated in a structured face-to-face interview. Participants were selected using a cluster random probability sampling with a random walk finding approach (Nobels et al, 2021c). They had to live in Belgium, speak Dutch, French or English, be at least 70 years old, and have sufficient cognitive ability to complete the interview.…”

“…The study sample consisted of a representative sample of the Belgian population aged 70 years and older (n=513) (Nobels et al, 2021c). The mean age was 79 years (SD: 6.4yrs, range 70-99yrs), 58.3% was female, 7.4% labelled themselves as non-heterosexual, 89.8% was community-dwelling, 31.2% had completed higher education, 26.1% labelled their financial situation as difficult and 48.3% reported low social support.…”
