Shaft Voltage Elimination Method to Reduce Bearing Faults in Dual Three-Phase Motor

Abstract: This paper proposes a method of eliminating common-mode voltage (CMV) and shaft voltage in dual three-phase motors using the carrier phase shift of space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM). SVPWM for the dual three-phase motor is simply implemented using two traditional three-phase SVPWM structures. The representative work of the study is to eliminate the shaft voltage by applying the carrier phase shift method due to the cancellation of CMV. It was verified that the proposed method could reduce the shaft v… Show more

“…When the inverter usually works, the output side of the inverter will inevitably make CMV, which will generate a large shaft current on the motor shaft, destroy the insulation performance of the motor, and reduce the service life of the motor [14], [15], [16]. Therefore, it is necessary to suppress the CMV amplitude.…”

“…This proportion is gradually increasing with the higher levels of power semiconductor devices and switching frequency [3]. Several factors can contribute to bearing failure, but the most significant one is bearing voltage [4][5][6]. The reason is the highfrequency common mode voltage produced by pulse-width modulation converter.…”

“…However, the method is suspected to be used in practical engineering. This paper proposed an improved algorithm for reducing bearing voltage in a dual three‐phase inverter system, but computational burden is heavy for the controller [6]. The author analysed the flow path of bearing current in motor and posed correspondingly a suppression method by adopting insulating coating between frame and bearing.…”

“…A circulating flux will then be produced in the frame, leading to a high-frequency inductive circulating bearing current [9,10]. Moreover, there are additional types of bearing currents, such as electric discharge machining (EDM) bearing currents or high-frequency capacitively bearing current [11,12]. EDM current is generated when the voltage across one of the bearings exceeds a threshold and a breakdown happens [13].…”
