Shaken not stirred: A molecular contribution to the systematics of genus Mugil (Teleostei, Mugilidae)

Abstract: With this work we addressed some molecular systematic issues within the Mugil cephalus species complex. Particular attention was paid to the debated situations of: (i) Mugil liza, occurring in partial sympatry with Mugil cephalus in the northwestern Atlantic, and (ii) Mugil platanus, considered by some authors a synonymy of the former species and distributed in the southwestern Atlantic. We sequenced 79 individuals of a 465-bp portion of the mitochondrial control region (CR) from 8 western Atlantic and 2 Medit… Show more

“…M. liza has been previously confused with Mugil cephalus and Mugil platanus (Heras et al, 2016;Whitfield et al, 2012). Mugil liza range was believed to be found as far as South of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil (Heras et al, 2009), and M. platanus was assumed to be a different mugilid species with a southern distribution.…”

“…Based on the analysis of mitochondrial DNA, Heras et al . () found two highly divergent M. liza populations: the northern population distributed from Cuba to Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil and the southern population distributed from Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, to Viedma, Argentina. Genetic structuring (Mai et al ., ) and analysis of δ 13 C and δ 18 O stable isotopes in otoliths of juvenile (Lemos et al ., ) showed that the southern population ranges from Argentina to São Paulo State, Brazil.…”
