Shaking table test of a damped‐outrigger system incorporating friction dampers

Abstract: The main purpose of this study is to investigate the seismic performance of a damped‐outrigger system incorporating friction dampers through numerical analysis and shaking table tests. A 9‐m‐tall steel structure specimen was designed by scaling down a 20‐story benchmark model. The specimen was equally divided into 10 floors; the outrigger beams together with the friction dampers could be installed in different floors. The normal force in the friction damper was adjustable so that its energy performance could b… Show more

“…For other section properties of the transition zone, the equivalent weak-axis shear area, 𝐴 𝑣,𝑦𝑦,𝑇𝑍 , and moment of inertia, 𝐼 𝑦𝑦,𝑇𝑍 , can be obtained by respectively integrating the weak-axis shear area, 𝐴 𝑣,𝑦𝑦 , and moment of inertia, 𝐼 𝑦𝑦 , of the section over the transition zone and then dividing by ℎ 𝑇𝑍 , as in Equations ( 30) and (31). Assuming that the weak-axis shear area of the IC section, 𝐴 𝑣,𝑦𝑦,𝐼𝐶 , is estimated to be 5/6 of the flange area, as it is for the 50 WSPDs in Table 1, the ratio of 𝐴 𝑣,𝑦𝑦,𝑇𝑍 to 𝐴 𝑣,𝑦𝑦,𝐼𝐶 ranges from 1.03 to 1.10, with an average of 1.05.…”

“…Among various energy‐consuming devices, viscous dampers have received more attention because they are more effective in dissipating energy‐y. Moreover, the efficiency of the damped outriggers is greatly affected by their location in the structure 10,11 . The mechanical modeling and dynamic equations of core structures with damped outriggers have also received some attention 12 .…”

“…As normally the boundary conditions of the experimental substructures were loaded by actuators, it means the number of actuators should be greater than or equal to the number of specimen DOFs. [13][14][15] To completely realize the specimen DOFs, some laboratories built six-DOF loading facilities, such as the Load and Boundary Condition Box (LBCB) at UIUC, 16,17 the Multi-Axial Testing System (MATS) at NCREE, 18 the Multi-Axial Subassemblage Testing System (MAST) at the University of Minnesota, 19 and so forth. However, not all the laboratories are capable of build large-scale six-DOF loading facilities, or have sufficient actuators for large-scale specimen.…”
