Shalimar Maize Hybrid 4, a Most Promising Hybrid for High Altitude Ecologies of Kashmir Valley

Abstract: Maize is one of the most important cereal crops of Kashmir Valley where it serves as a source of food, feed, fodder and industrial raw material, providing enormous opportunity for crop diversification, value addition and employment generation. However, the average productivity of maize in Kashmir Valley is quite low (1.5 t ha-1) when compared to the national productivity (2.5 t ha-1). The development, dissemination and adoption of high yielding, early maturity, cold tolerant maize hybrids can serve as the most… Show more

“…The cultivation of STRVs encourages the farmers to invest more on inputs due to reduced risks of crop failure. This results in an increase in farm output during all the years, irrespective of the severity of stresses [128][129][130]. Besides, STRVs represent an important adaptation to climate change that can increase farm productivity and ensure production from the affected land.…”

“…In India, maize is cultivated on an area of 9.86 million hectares (mha) with a production of 31.51 million tonnes and a productivity of 3.19 t ha-1 [1]. In Jammu and Kashmir, maize is the second most important cereal crop after rice [2], cultivated over an area of about 3.08 lakh hectares with a production of 5.12 lakh tons and a productivity of 1.7 t ha-1 [3].…”

“…In Jammu and Kashmir, the crop is cultivated over an area of about 0.31 million ha with the production of about 0.52 million tonnes and productivity of 1.7 tonnes ha -1 . In Kashmir valley, 14.50 per cent of the maize area is irrigated and the remaining 85.5 per cent is rainfed (Ahangar et al 2020). Maize requires 450-600 mm of water during its life cycle at critical stages of crop growth viz., knee height stage, flowering stage (tasseling and silking) and grain filling stage (Aslam et al 2015).…”
