Shape-directed self-assembly of nanodumbbells into superstructure polymorphs

Abstract: Nanodumbbells were assembled into superstructures with three orientations, and distinct roles of individual subunits of nanodumbbells in the assembly are uncovered.

“…18,[30][31][32] Directing in-plane anisotropy by relying on structural features of the inorganic nodes instead is desirable, but requires access to preformed blocks with distinct low symmetries. This strategy has been successfully demonstrated using anisotropic colloidal nanoparticles, 33,34 but not for atomically precise inorganic clusters. This work represents, to the best of our knowledge, the rst such example.…”

“…In addition, NPCs were prepared using NaYF 4 @GaYF 4 core–shell NDs with significant steric hindrance at both ends as the building block. [ 38 ] NPCs composed of a single ND were obtained at an NP/PSMA ratio of 1:5 (Figure 3g), and many clusters were found to contain two NDs when changing the NP/PSMA mass ratio to 1:8 (Figure 3h and Figure S11, Supporting Information). Interestingly, unlike NR dimers, the two NDs are not arranged side by side, but instead they are stacked orthogonally to form a cross‐like geometry.…”

“…The 9 mL of OA is excessive to 0.4 mmol Y, so the diffusion process accelerates, resulting in NPs with blunter boundary. [ 18 ] The amount of 12 mL OA is larger than the critical nucleation concentration for NaYF 4 formation, resulting in more seeds in the initial solution. [ 19,20 ] F − ions decrease the chemical potential of the crystals to improve the stability.…”
