Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) Actuators: The Role of Material, Form, and Scaling Effects

Abstract: Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are smart materials that are widely used to create intelligent devices because of their high energy density, actuation strain, and biocompatibility characteristics. Given their unique properties, SMAs are found to have significant potential for implementation in many emerging applications in mobile robots, robotic hands, wearable devices, aerospace/automotive components, and biomedical devices. Here, the state–of–the–art of thermal and magnetic SMA actuators in terms of their constit… Show more

“…92,93 The underlying mechanism involves crystalline phase transformation which depends on temperature. 93 An SMA is shaped in a mold (in our case, a flat mold), annealed at high temperatures, and then quenched with water. They are easily deformed and tolerate high strain, which can be used to roll them even when integrated with a flexible solar panel.…”

“…SMAs are metal alloys that can be deformed when cold but return to their predeformed (“remembered”) shape when heated. , The underlying mechanism involves crystalline phase transformation which depends on temperature . An SMA is shaped in a mold (in our case, a flat mold), annealed at high temperatures, and then quenched with water.…”

“…As depicted in figure 1, soft robots offer a variety of drive modes, encompassing pneumatic drive [11][12][13][14], shape memory alloy (SMA) drive [15][16][17][18], dielectric elastomer (DE) drive [19], external magnetic field drive [20], cable drive [21], permanent magnet drive [22], Electromagnetic Oscillatory Actuator (EOA) [23] and other physical drives. Additionally, they can be driven through chemical means by converting chemical energy into mechanical energy or by immersing the soft robot in a chemical solution to initiate a chemical reaction [24][25][26], among other techniques.…”

“…Therefore, it has a significant advantage in the design of intelligent soft gripper. Furthermore, the soft grippers based on SMA wire also can simplify the conventional wire-actuated external actuation mechanism, and can achieve active actuation and recovery [31]. For example, it can solve the problem of response after actuation that proposed by Zhang et al [37] for soft gripper grasping with motor driven guide wire.…”
