Shared control methodology based on head positioning and vector fields for people with quadriplegia

Abstract: Mobile robotic systems are used in a wide range of applications. Especially in the assistive field, they can enhance the mobility of the elderly and disable people. Modern robotic technologies have been implemented in wheelchairs to give them intelligence. Thus, by equipping wheelchairs with intelligent algorithms, controllers, and sensors, it is possible to share the wheelchair control between the user and the autonomous system. The present research proposes a methodology for intelligent wheelchairs based on … Show more

“…For instance, UASs have been used for crop field monitoring [32], civil structures inspection and analysis [9], and surveillance [33], among others. Regarding mobile robots, they cover applications such as cleaning [34], surveillance [35], support for crop monitoring [36], assisting people with disabilities [37], etc. Several reviews about the application of UAS and UGVs exist in the literature.…”

“…In summary, assistive robotics technology has demonstrated its effectiveness in enhancing autonomy and aiding elderly and disabled individuals [22]. Studies have reported a 40% increase in daily activities and a 30% reduction in caregiver demands [23,24]. When comparing commercially available devices with those under development and various innovative approaches in robotic meal assistance solutions, it becomes evident that commercial manipulators offer established solutions characterized by high costs.…”

“…A polar histogram representing the space around the wheelchair is constructed and the free direction closest to that indicated by the joystick is chosen as the direction of advance at each moment. The user's intention can also be predicted with the help of a map of the environment in which goals are defined [22]- [24]. The authors in ref.…”
