“…We also considered four non‐health expenditures as dependent variables: total non‐health expenditure, food expenditure, education expenditure and gift expenditure. Following Li and Ma (2023), we defined gift expenditure as the expenditures on gifts given at weddings, birthdays, funerals and other social events. All the expenditure variables were measured at 1000 yuan per capita per year.…”

“…The seemingly unrelated regression (SURE) model (Lee et al, 2018), the structural equation model (SEM) (Bopp et al, 2020) and the generalised structural equation (GSE) model (Nie et al, 2021) are the most widely used methods for mediation analysis. While the SURE and SEM models are suitable only when the dependent variable is normally distributed (Perez et al, 2018), the GSE model can be employed more widely, even when the dependent variable is not normally distributed (Li & Ma, 2023). Since health expenditure, the dependent variable of our primary interest, is left‐censored, we used the GSE model to investigate how flush toilet use influences rural residents' health expenditure.…”

“…Total income is calculated as the sum of total earned and unearned income sources. Regarding poverty, previous studies suggest various methods for constructing poverty variables such as income poverty or consumption poverty using different poverty lines while combining with other criteria (Demombynes & Vu, 2015; Duong et al, 2021; Li & Ma, 2023; A. Zhang & Imai, 2023). In our research, poverty status is classified and determined by the local authorities based on the criteria set by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) (Demombynes & Vu, 2015; A. T. Q. Pham & Mukhopadhaya, 2022).…”

“…Some families reduce spending on essential consumer goods to buy gifts. For example, social interaction-oriented gift expenditure could crowd out rural residents' energy expenditures and drive them to energy poverty (Li & Ma, 2023). Some other families even raise money to buy gifts by borrowing money or selling blood (Chen et al, 2018).…”
