Shear Bond Strength and Mode of Failure of Polypropylene Fibers in Orthodontic Flash-Free Adhesive

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effects of magnetostrictive and piezoelectric scalers on the shear bond strength (SBS), failure mode of the polypropylene fiber adhesive brackets, and the load of both scaler tips. The adhesive precoated (APC) Flash-Free brackets were placed on the buccal surfaces of sixty maxillary first premolars, which were divided into three equal groups of 20 specimens each, following the control group (no scaling), the magnetostrictive group, and the piezoelectric group. Al… Show more

“…Improvements and innovations have mainly been focused on materials used in orthodontic therapy with fixed appliances so far. However, numerous novelties have indicated the necessity of improvements in the methods, techniques or procedures used with the aim of: reducing the initial bonding time 5 , improved accuracy of placement of brackets on teeth 6 , adequate working time of the adhesive 7 , the most optimal strength of the connection between the two adherents, which should withstand all the forces of the oral environment as well as the applied orthodontic forces, reduction of some initial bonding stages, improved patient comfort, facilitating and simplifying the work of orthodontists 8 .…”

“…It was supplied, along with the bracket, in individually sealed blister packs to prevent the risk of cross-contamination. Moreover, this new technology claims to be comparable with the conventional adhesive in the aspect of shear bond strength in normal conditions or even after a load of an ultrasonic scaler was used to test it [ 15 , 16 ]. Another benefit is the reduction in chair time by eliminating the process of excessive flash removal on bonding procedures.…”
