The freshwater red algal genus Sheathia contains species with heterocortication (both bulbous and cylindrical cells covering the main axis) and homocortication (only cylindrical cells). When the genus was proposed, the species with heterocortication were revised, but all specimens with homocortication were assigned to Sheathia arcuata with the caveat that it may represent a species complex. Recent studies have described new species with homocortication and S. arcuata has been rendered paraphyletic. In the current study, new sequences of the rbcL and 5′ region of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I markers were combined with previously published data to construct a robust phylogeny and circumscribe new species. Four new species, S. abscondita, S. californica, S. plantuloides, and S. transpacifica are proposed. Examination of morphological characters among homocorticate species show no diagnostic characters to distinguish among species, whereas S. plantuloides is only known from sporophytes (chantransia) so it lacks the typical morphological characters derived from the gametophytes for comparison. Although DNA sequence data would be needed to make a positive species identification, geography could be employed to narrow the identification to one or two species. The genus is geographically widespread having been recorded from oceanic islands and five continents, whereas the individual species typically occur on a single continent. With this study, the number of species recognized in Sheathia is raised to 17; seven heterocorticate and 10 homocorticate, making this genus one of the most species rich in the Batrachospermales. As well, the resulting phylogeny provides insights into the evolution of heterocortication in Sheathia.

Highlights of new, interesting, and emerging research findings on substratum-associated microbiota covered from a survey of 2019 literature from primarily freshwaters provide insight into research trends of interest to the Water Environment Federation and others interested in benthic, aquatic environments. Coverage of topics on bottom-associated or attached algae and cyanobacteria, though not comprehensive, includes new methods, taxa new-to-science, nutrient dynamics, auto-and heterotrophic interactions, grazers, bioassessment, herbicides and other pollutants, metal contaminants, and nuisance, and bloom-forming and harmful algae. Coverage of bacteria, also not comprehensive, focuses on the ecology of benthic biofilms and microbial communities, along with the ecology of microbes like Caulobacter crescentus, Rhodobacter, and other freshwater microbial species. Bacterial topics covered also include metagenomics and metatranscriptomics, toxins and pollutants, bacterial pathogens and bacteriophages, and bacterial physiology. “…Ji et al (2014) conducted an investigation on endemic Batrachospermaceae species in China and reported that Sheathia longipedicellata (D.Hua & Z.X.Shi) J.‐F.Han, F.R.Nan, J.Feng, J.P.Lv, QiLiu, Kociolek & S.L.Xie (as Batrachospermum longipedicellatum D.Hua & Z.X.Shi), S. hongdongensis (S.L.Xie & J.Feng) J.‐F.Han F.‐R.Nan, J.Feng, J.‐P.Lv, QiLiu, Kociolek & S.L.Xie (as B. hongdongense S.L.Xie & J.Feng), and S. arcuata (as B. arcuatum Kylin) from China were closely related with almost no sequence variations (0–1 bp) for rbc L data. The freshwater red algal genus Sheathia is one of the most species‐rich genera in the Batrachospermales, containing species with heterocortication (both bulbous and cylindrical cells covering the main axis) and homocortication (only cylindrical cells). The hidden diversity of homocorticated Sheathia species has gained research momentum. Recent studies have revised these taxa and described many new species. In this study, a new homocorticated Sheathia species is described and illustrated from Yunnan, China, based on phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence data. Sheathia yunnanensis sp. nov is morphologically characterized by having homocortication, carpogonium with bent or slightly constricted lanceolate trichogyne, large carposporophyte and carposporangium. However, it is only distinguishable from other homocorticated species by DNA sequence data. Phylogenetic analyses based on rbcL, COI‐5P, psbA and concatenated rbcL + COI‐5P alignment indicated that Sheathia yunnanensis form an independent clade from other homocorticated Sheathia species with high interspecific divergence (rbcL: 3.9–4.9%/37–54 bp, COI‐5P: 6.1–6.6%/36–39 bp and psbA: 2.2–3.9%/18–32 bp). Sheathia yunnanensis, as the first gametophyte of Sheathia species reported in Yunnan, differs from other Sheathia species reported only as ‘Chantransia' sporophyte stage. As a result of this study, the number of Sheathia species recognized in China increased to eight, including one heterocorticate and seven homocorticated including three only known from the ‘Chantransia' sporophyte stage. The description of this new species expands the diversity of Sheathia in the world.
