Sheathia jinchengensis (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta), a new freshwater red algal species described from North China

Abstract: A new species of freshwater red algae, Sheathia jinchengensis, is described based on material collected from rocks in a clean and cold-water stream from the Jincheng region of Shanxi province in North China. Molecular sequences of rbcL and psbA genes were used to evaluate the phylogenetic relationship among samples of S. jinchengensis and other Sheathia species from several regions of the world. The results showed that S. jinchengensis formed an independent branch and separated from the previously published se… Show more

“…Likewise, the whorl diameter range of 181.8-477.3 µm is within the range of other Sheathia species (Table 1). S. jinchengensis was noted to have large carpogonia (17-29 µm in diameter and >92 µm in length) (Han et al 2018). Carpogonia of this size would be notable and diagnostic, but unfortunately there were no photomicrographs or drawings of these structures.…”

“…Although S. arcuata and four endemic Sheathia species have been reported from China, we recognize a single species S. longipedicellata, using the oldest species epithet for species from that region. Previous studies have noted unique morphological characteristics primarily for the shape and size of the carpogonium and smaller whorl diameter (Hua and Shi 1996, Han et al 2018, 2019. A scimitar-shaped or curved carpogonium was noted for S. hongdongensis in the protologue and the drawings for S. longipedicellata show similar shaped carpogonia (Hua and Shi 1996).…”

“…A new species of Batrachospermales, Sheathia matouensis sp. nov., described from fresh spring water in Shanxi province, China, can be distinguished from similar taxa based on rbcL and psbA molecular data and morphological differences in the carpogonium and smaller whorls (Han et al, 2019). Molecular and morphological analysis of Batrachospermales from freshwaters in India and Nepal suggested members of Sheathia arcuata (Kylin) Salomaki et M.L.Vis form a species complex with three distinct clades proposed as S. assamica Necchi, J.A.…”

“…Ji et al (2014) conducted an investigation on endemic Batrachospermaceae species in China and reported that Sheathia longipedicellata (D.Hua & Z.X.Shi) J.‐F.Han, F.R.Nan, J.Feng, J.P.Lv, QiLiu, Kociolek & S.L.Xie (as Batrachospermum longipedicellatum D.Hua & Z.X.Shi), S. hongdongensis (S.L.Xie & J.Feng) J.‐F.Han F.‐R.Nan, J.Feng, J.‐P.Lv, QiLiu, Kociolek & S.L.Xie (as B. hongdongense S.L.Xie & J.Feng), and S. arcuata (as B. arcuatum Kylin) from China were closely related with almost no sequence variations (0–1 bp) for rbc L data. Subsequently Han et al (2018, 2019) obtained similar results and proposed two new species within the Sheathia longipedicellata complex, namely, S. jinchengensis J.‐F.Han, F.‐R.Nan, J.Feng, J.‐P.Lv, QiLiu, Kociolek & S.L.Xie and S. matouensis J.‐F.Han, F.‐R.Nan, J.Feng, J.‐P.Lv, QiLiu, X.‐D.Liu & S.L.Xie. Necchi et al (2019) and Vis et al (2020) proposed that the Sheathia longipedicellata complex species from China ( S. matouensis , S. jinchengensis , S. hondongensis and S. arcuata ) consist of a single species as synonymies of S. longipedicellata .…”
