“…In 1979, Decker noted that our criminal justice policies and research often focus on municipal police and the way in which city patrol operates. To date, Decker’s call for more studies that focus on rural areas and sheriffs’ offices remains largely unanswered, even though there are more than 3,000 sheriffs’ offices in the United States and that they represent a significant part of this country’s policing resources (for a study on sheriffs’ perceptions of juvenile trafficking see Hancock, 2019). A review of the literature did find a few studies on sheriffs’ perceptions on firearm regulation.…”

“…Despite the importance of this issue, little research has explored the factors that influence law enforcement, service providers or public perceptions of sexually exploited minors. One study did survey 81 sheriffs in nine different states to measure their views on the prevalence of child sex trafficking and their perceptions of trafficked youth (Hancock, 2019). Although sheriffs tended to report child sex trafficking was not a serious problem in their jurisdiction, they did overwhelmingly view trafficked youth as victims in need of services.…”

“…Criminal justice research often focuses on police departments (Decker, 1979). Research on sheriff departments remains scarce in comparison, despite the significant role sheriffs have in their respective counties (Except see: Meitl et al, 2020; Meitl et al, 2021; Hancock, 2019; Woldoff et al, 2017; Thompson et al, 2011). While there are no recent studies on Texas Sheriffs views of immigration, research suggests the more conservative a jurisdiction’s citizenry, the more likely they are to support limiting undocumented immigrants into their area and more likely to support removal efforts (Saad, 2010).…”
