“…The increase in lysozyme activity may occur as a physiological immune response against chemical toxicities (Chen et al., 2017). In another study, yellow catfish exposed to α‐ethinylestradiol had higher liver lysozyme activity (Mukherjee et al., 2016). In contrast to our finding, serum lysozyme activity may be decreased in common carp (Cyprinus carpio ) either collected from the polluted area in Karun Riverian Iran or subject to different phosalone concentrations for 14 days, respectively (Hosseini et al., 2014; Kaya et al., 2015), suggested an immunosuppressive effects caused by the acute exposure to toxic substances (Çelik et al., 2013).…”

“…The dissected body masses of E. carteri were maintained in aerated glass aquaria in controlled laboratory conditions for 7 days to minimize the physiological stress and to reorganize their aquiferous system (Duckworth and Pomponi, 2005). Each experimental set consisted of 5 replicates of E. carteri , immersed in a volume of 20 l of pond water taken in different glass aquaria (Mukherjee et al , 2016c). Specimens of E. carteri were treated with sublethal and environmentally realistic concentrations of 2, 4, 8 and 16 mg/L of washing soda for 24, 48, 96, 192 and 384 hours for toxicological analyses.…”

“…The experimental data were initially checked for normality and homogeneity using Bartlett’s test (Mukherjee et al , 2016c). Since all data were normal, parametric statistics were applied, following one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).…”

“…Once recognized and phagocytized, microorganisms serve as food for sponges and are killed with the help of effector molecules that participate in oxidative as well as nonoxidative (enzymatic) mechanisms (Peskin et al ., 1998; Dzik, 2010; Mukherjee et al ., 2016). Sponges apply oxidative killing processes based on the production of reactive oxygen [O‐(ROS)] and nitrogen [N‐(NOS)] species, for example.…”
