Shifting power through climate research: applying decolonial methodologies

Abstract: This discussion brief aims to provide insights into ways that individual researchers can aim to shift rather than reinforce unequal power relations in climate and environment research that disadvantage marginalized communities and the Global South. It seeks to launch wider discussions and actions on the subject to rectify colonial-era legacies that continue to affect power dynamics, detrimentally skewing research and its uptake.

“…To address concerns relating to the research process, they propose that researchers need to be multiculturally competent and aware of how marginalised people are positioned. Cokley and Awad, Barnes (2018), Lipscombe et al (2021), and Daszkiewicz et al (2022) agree that there is a need for researchers to be respectful and aware of the multiple ways that power disparities and coloniality are reinscribed and should be addressed throughout the research process. Furthermore, to dismantle the unequal power division between the researcher and those who are researched, researchers need to interrogate their assumptions and how these assumptions could contribute to perpetuating inequality through the use of research methodology (Barnes, 2018).…”

“…This shapes the kind of knowledge funders seek, affecting the design and criteria of research proposal requirements, as highlighted in Box 3 below. Scholars have previously reflected on how institutionalized research practices hinder researchers' engagement with diverse knowledge systems at every step of a research project, including fundraising (Daszkiewicz et al, 2022).…”

“…Climate change impacts are already being experienced and will only become more significant in the coming decades. Notably, impacts will be most strongly felt by those already marginalised or vulnerable within societies [1]. However, in addressing the climate crisis, there is a risk in creating new or exacerbating existing injustices-especially if rapid and deep transitions are to be targeted [2].…”
