Shifting the Focus: Sequential Methods of Analysis With Qualitative Data

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to illustrate both the processes of data analysis and the methodological development involved in adopting the sequential use of two data analysis methods applied to the same data set. Understanding of the phenomena of interest was sought through examining both the content and the form of nurses' accounts of practice experiences. Initially, a method of thematic content analysis was applied to understand what the nurses said about their experiences. The core theme of nurses' change… Show more

“…We therefore performed qualitatively-driven, sequential analysis, that is, a focused further analysis of the same data, using a different analytical technique (Simons, Lathlean, & Squire, 2008). The sequential analysis we present here focused on care-related labour and young women's HIV risk.…”

“…Therefore, at this stage, recurring words, repeated happenings, meanings and concepts were integrated, connected and grouped into broad categories. The purpose of this was to detect conceptual similarities, to refine differences between categories and to discover patterns (Simons et al, 2008). Finally, selective coding was conducted to further refine and unite categories based on overarching ideas and concepts and to derive themes (Table 1).…”

“…I used a thematic analytic approach, which Simons et al (2008) describe as an inductive process resulting from the identification of categories from a critical review of the data, followed by careful comparison of those categories to enable commonalities to emerge. Gibson et al (2009) extended this definition to include additionally identifying relationships and differences within the data.…”
