Shifts in Riparian Plant Life Forms Following Flow Regulation

Abstract: Flow regulation affects bordering riparian plant communities worldwide, but how different plant life forms are affected by river regulation still needs further research. In northern Sweden, we selected 10 rivers ranging from free-flowing to low, moderately, and highly regulated ones. “…These are quite general effects on plants, but hydropeaking can also have negative effects on plants' germination success in the riparian zone, and their subsequent establishment, resulting in vegetation communities that are especially poor in flooding-intolerant plants (Bejarano et al, 2020b) and richer in competitive species (Aguiar et al, 2018).
