Shigella Species Isolated from Stool Specimens between 2002 and 2011 Years and their Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles

Abstract

ÖZET Şigelloz Shigella bakterilerinin neden olduğu bir barsak infeksiyonudur ve SUMMARY Shigella Species Isolated from Stool Specimens between 2002 and 2011 Years and their Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles Shigellosis is an intestinal infection caused by Shigella bacteria and the duration of Shigella gastroenteritis is longer than the other kind of bacterial gastroenteritis. In addition to supportive treatment, antimicrobial therapy was required for treatment of shigellozis. Appropriate antibiotic use is important to prevent the development of resistant strains. In this study, 149 Shigella strains isolated from stool specimens of patienst at Cumhuriyet University Training and Research Hospital between 2002 and 2011 were examined. The distribution of these bacterial species and resistance rates to commonly used antibiotics (ampicillin, cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole) were evaluated retrospectively. Resistance rates were compared between years 2002-2006 and 2007-2011 years (2002-2006) and (2007-2011). The determination of resistance rates among these microorganism, and in addition continuous updating of these resistance rates may contribute to the appropriate empirical antibiotic selection and therefore the development of resistance to antibiotics in Shigella bacteria can be delayed.
