Shigellosis Linked to Sex Venues, Australia

Abstract: From January 1 to July 31, 2000, 148 cases of Shigella infection were reported in New South Wales, Australia, compared with an annual average of 95 cases. Of reported cases, 83% were confirmed as Shigella sonnei biotype G infections; 80% were in homosexual men. Visiting a sex venue in the 2 weeks before onset of illness was the only factor significantly associated with shigellosis.

“…Higher rates of E. histolytica carriage in MSM likely refl ect high-risk sex behavior and multiple exposures, resulting in increased risk for acquisition. This hypothesis is supported by the high rates of sexually transmitted infections that occur in Australian MSM who visit sex-on-premises venues (15). Antibody responses predominantly occur with invasive disease.…”

“…These changes increased the ability of women and same-sex attracted individuals, respectively, to exercise greater rights in their pursuit of intimate relationships. In addition, many people in Australia have at their disposal technologies to assist in reproduction (Terry and Shorey 2000;Wang et al 2011), technologies promoting pornography and other 'cyber space' sexualities (Voon 2001;Flood 2007), the availability of public sex venues (O'sullivan et al 2002;Lyons et al 2010) and a variety of contraceptives (Weisberg 2002;Family Planning Victoria 2012). There is also legal recognition of sex work in some States such as Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales, that provides a range of services for clients with diverse sexual interests ranging from outer course practices such as use of sex toys, to bondage, discipline and submission fantasies (Seib et al 2010).…”

“…In developed countries, the following two populations are at particular risk for Shigella infection; children in daycare centers or nursery schools and male homosexuals (gay bowel syndrome). 19,20 In the latter group, cases are almost always due to S. flexneri infection transmitted by anal-oral sexual practices. The isolated serotype is related to the age of patients; S. sonnei is more frequent before the age of 15 years, while S. flexneri is more common in patients older than 15 years.…”
